Dental Exam in Beverly Hills, CA
A thorough dental exam in Beverly Hills is the simplest way to catch small problems before they turn into painful or expensive ones. At ConfiDental, every exam includes a careful check of your teeth, gums, bite and jaw, an oral cancer screening and low-dose digital X-rays when needed, followed by a plain-language explanation of what we found and what, if anything, needs attention.
No rushing, no pressure and no surprise treatment. Just a clear picture of your oral health and a plan you understand.
What’s Included in Your Dental Exam
A comprehensive dental check-up at our office covers:
- Your health history. Medications, conditions and past dental work that affect your mouth
- Cavities, cracks, worn enamel and signs of grinding
- Gentle pocket measurements to check for early gum disease
- Existing dental work. Fillings, crowns, bridges and implants checked for wear, leaks or decay at the edges
- Bite and jaw joint. How your teeth meet, and any clicking, clenching or jaw pain
- Oral cancer screening. A painless look and feel of your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, jaw and neck
- Digital X-rays when needed. To find problems between teeth and below the gum line that can’t be seen by eye
- Your concerns. Sensitivity, bad breath, stains or anything else you want us to look at
- A clear summary. What is healthy, what to watch and what needs treatment, with costs in writing
Dental Exam vs. Dental Cleaning: What’s the Difference?
| Dental exam | Dental cleaning |
Who does it | Your dentist | A dental hygienist, or your dentist |
What it involves | Diagnosing problems with teeth, gums, bite, jaw and soft tissues | Removing plaque and tartar, then polishing |
Includes X-rays? | When needed | No |
Includes oral cancer screening? | Yes | No |
Result | A diagnosis and a plan | Cleaner teeth and healthier gums |
Most checkups combine the two in one visit. If tartar has built up below the gum line, you may need a deep cleaning instead of a regular one. Read how regular cleanings help prevent gum disease.
Digital X-Rays: Only When They Help
X-rays show cavities between teeth, infection at the root tips, bone levels and teeth that haven’t come in yet. We take them based on your needs, not on a fixed schedule, which matches the American Dental Association’s guidance on dental X-rays.
- Bitewing X-rays check for decay between the back teeth.
- Periapical X-rays show the whole tooth, down to the root tip.
- Full-mouth X-rays give a complete baseline, usually for new patients.
- 3D cone beam CT scans are used only for specific needs, such as implant planning or a hidden infection, in line with the FDA’s guidance on dental CBCT.
Digital X-rays use much less radiation than older film X-rays. Tell us if you are pregnant or think you might be.
Oral Cancer Screening at Every Exam
Oral cancer is far easier to treat when it is found early, and most early signs are painless. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research calls your regular dental checkup “an excellent opportunity” for this exam. During your screening we check for:
- Sores that haven’t healed within two weeks
- White or red patches
- Lumps or thickened areas in the mouth, lips or neck
- Changes in how the tongue moves or feels
The screening takes a few minutes, needs no special preparation and doesn’t hurt.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
- A conversation. We ask about your health, your dental history and anything that has made past visits difficult.
- The exam and X-rays. Everything listed above, at a pace that feels comfortable.
- A walkthrough. We show you photos and X-rays on screen and explain them in plain language.
- A written plan. If you need treatment, each item is listed with its cost and your estimated insurance coverage. Nothing is scheduled until you agree.
A new patient visit usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Forms and details are on our new patients page.
How Often Should You Have a Dental Exam?
The American Dental Association recommends that you see your dentist regularly, and the right schedule depends on your mouth.
Your situation | Typical exam schedule |
Healthy teeth and gums, low risk | Every 6 to 12 months |
Frequent cavities or heavy tartar | Every 6 months, sometimes more often |
Gum disease or after a deep cleaning | Every 3 to 4 months |
Pregnancy, diabetes, dry mouth or orthodontic treatment | As your dentist recommends, often more often |
Pain, swelling or a broken tooth | Now. See our emergency dentist page. |
Why Regular Exams Save You Money and Discomfort
Most dental problems start small and silent. A tiny cavity found at an exam can often be fixed with a quick tooth-colored filling. Left for another year or two, the same cavity may need a crown or root canal. The same is true for early gum disease, a cracked filling or a grinding habit that a night guard could protect against.
Regular exams are also the time to plan ahead, whether that means Invisalign, whitening or replacing old dental work.
Comfortable Care for Nervous Patients
If you have avoided the dentist for a while, you are not alone, and you won’t be judged. We go at your pace, explain everything before we do it, and stop whenever you raise your hand. Many of our patients came back to regular care after years away, and their first exam is usually far easier than they expected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I get a comprehensive dental check-up in Beverly Hills?
At ConfiDental on Brighton Way. Every check-up includes a full exam of your teeth, gums, bite and jaw, an oral cancer screening, digital X-rays when needed and a plain-language review of what we find.
How long does a dental exam take?
A routine exam with a cleaning usually takes about an hour. A first visit with full X-rays can take 60 to 90 minutes.
Does a dental exam hurt?
No. The exam itself is painless. Gum measurements may feel like light pressure, and we can go slowly if your gums are sensitive.
How often should I get a dental exam?
Most people do well with an exam every 6 to 12 months. If you have gum disease, frequent cavities or other risk factors, your dentist may suggest every 3 to 4 months.
Is a dental exam covered by insurance?
Most PPO plans cover routine exams and X-rays, often in full. We check your benefits before your visit so you know what to expect.
Do I need X-rays at every exam?
No. X-rays are taken based on your risk and history. Many healthy adults need bitewing X-rays only every one to two years.
What is an oral cancer screening?
A quick, painless check of your mouth, lips, tongue, throat and neck for sores, patches or lumps that could be early signs of oral cancer. It is part of every exam at our office.
What is the difference between an oral exam and a dental cleaning?
The exam is your dentist’s diagnosis of your teeth, gums and mouth. The cleaning removes plaque and tartar. Most visits include both.
Can I just get a cleaning without an exam?
Your dentist needs to examine your teeth and gums regularly to diagnose problems and decide what type of cleaning you need, so the two usually go together.
What should I bring to my first dental exam?
Your insurance card, a list of your medications and any recent dental X-rays from another office. Filling in your forms online beforehand saves time.
I haven’t been to the dentist in years. Is that a problem?
Not at all. We see many patients returning after a long break. We start with an unhurried exam and a clear plan, and treat one step at a time.
